Autism Awareness Day

Today, April 2nd, marks a special daythe seventh annual World Autism Awareness Day. Lincoln’s PTA wants to say a very special thank you to all the teachers, staff, students, parents and friends who support our students living with Autism (both mainstream and special education) here at Lincoln every single day. We will never completely be able to understand what life is like for those living with Autism, but we are continuing to learn more about them and from them.

To the parents of our amazing students living with Autismyour bravery and dedication is unbelievably inspiring. Thank you for enduring and bringing your child to Lincoln every day. We know it’s not easy, but we hope it never goes unappreciated.

“Think of it: a disability is usually defined in terms of what is missingBut autismis as much about what is abundant as what is missing, an over-expression of the very traits that make our species unique” – Paul Collins, Not Even Wrong: Adventures in Autism

Arts-heavy Preschool Helps Children Grow Emotionally

How do children learn how to learn? One essential skill is mastering their emotions – learning how to stay positive as much as possible, and how to deal with those inevitable interludes of sadness, anger or fear.

Newly published research suggests low-income kids are more likely to develop these all-important abilities if they attend a unique preschool program that integrates education and the arts.

The arts-rich curriculum produced more “positive emotions such as interest, happiness and pride, and greater growth in emotion regulation across the school year,” reports West Chester University psychologist Eleanor D. Brown.

These results are particularly significant, she adds, given “the critical importance of children’s social-emotional readiness to learn.”

An Arts Experience

A small group of kids from Lincoln Elementary got to experience being an artist hands-on today. Eight of our kids won the grand prize from our last fundraiser…a Limo ride. But, where would this limo take them? To a park? To Chuck E. Cheese? To McDonalds? No. We took them to the AMOCA, American Museum of Ceramic Art, about five blocks up the street. We followed that up with a quick visit with sculptor, Dan Romero, at the Sculpture Park.

At AMOCA, they toured the KilnOpening exhibit featuring work by local high school and college students and their teachers. Following a quick tour, we made a beeline to their large ceramics studio to try our hands at our own ceramic sculptures. Watching the kids make a mess with the clay and come up the most creative piggybank/fountain/whatchmacallits was a treat. We will be picking up their art pieces next week after they have been heated in the Kiln.

Then we make a quick run, via our limo, over to the Sculpture Park. We watched Dan cut some metal with his blowtorch and laughed as Mrs. McMullen and Chara Swodeck played on the 3-person Teeter-Totter.

We ended with a ice cream sandwiches…just as it started to rain. It was a great afternoon.
